the great overhaul

because shit was sooooo fucked

Well, the era of my infrastructure as code has come to an end. The original reason was me losing my ssh key, cause uhhh… backups who? But, the way my servers used to be set up kinda sucked anyways. It was overcomplicated, underdocumented, and honestly i must’ve been on a bender or something when i got that going cause i’ve got no clue how i learned any of that stuff.

Anyway, onto the changes. I moved entirely away from kubernetes and iac, which means that my configs aren’t as condensed. However, their implementation is much less complicated for me to understand, as rather than rewriting a config, it’s just webuis and whatnot with some yaml mixed in for flavor. I will need to manually share and back up my files, and secret management isn’t as simple, but i’ll figure those things out as i need to, rather than all at once like with iac.

Another benefit to this stuff is that i got to condense my machines, and separate my nas onto dedicated hardware instead of a vm, which is nice for upgrades and maintenance.

As for my services… I shut some of them down. I don’t run xmpp anymore, or httpbin, and the data for both is long gone. However, i now host some new services that’re publicly accessible, like nextcloud. Eventually i’ll have a new site running for a webring i’m a part of, so stay tuned for that bullshit i guess.

Now, everything is on debian and docker rather than a mishmash of nixos bullshit, which is a lot simpler for my dumb little fox brain to wrap around. I’ll probably need to figure out ansible at some point, but eh… the setup is good enough.

anyway, back up your keys

and as always. stay caffeinated.
